TFA - Gender Paragraph

Discuss how an appreciation of gender influences the reader’s understanding of Okonkwo’s character: In Chinua Achebe’s African Literature Novel "Things Fall Apart''; it is demonstrated t leaders that much of the Igbo culture is gendered, from the men who crop and the women who grow. It is a fact that women are seen to be the weaker sex in Things Fall Apart, but they are also blessed with qualities that make them worthy of worship because they are the ones who raise and give birth to children. Furthermore, Okonkwo is very masculine and dislikes anything that is feminine to him, he does not like feminine qualities due to his father's traits, who is called an “ Agabala ,” or another name for a woman, a man with no titles. This motivates Okonkwo into becoming the fearless man he is, to hate everything his father loved, such as being gentle and idle. TFA - Introductory Paragraph Practice

The personal history of an author can have a significant influence on the way meaning is constructed in his/her writing. Comment on specific instances of such influence in Things Fall Apart. In China Achebe’s famous African literature novel “Things Fall Apart”; he self-expresses his own personal Igbo and Christian identity - This has strongly impacted and has shaped the context of the story of TFA.   Things Fall Apart gives its readers both subjective viewpoints of the local Igbo and Christian customs and beliefs, and Achebe has done that by demonstrating both flaws and strengths of both the Igbos and Christians. Achebe’s story is revolved its main character, Okonkwo. An Igbo who was not flexible in the change that Umofia was going to face - Okonkwo is a man who refuses change.  This perhaps is imagery portrayed by Achebe to show that maybe the Igbos and Colonizers/Missionaries never precisely got along.

Okonkwo Character Analysis

What is the significance of Okonkwo’s character? What does he represent or is symbolic of?  Okonkwo is the main character of Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo symbolises the old original cultural ideas of the Igbo culture. Despite Oknokwo being the main character of Things Fall Apart, he is an also an influential person and he is a clan leader, he also beat the most active wrestler who remained undefeated until he came across Okonkwo, he also he has an intense fear into ending up like his father “Unoka” which left an impact onto Okonkwo into becoming a very aggressive man he is, he is hardworking and is able to provide for his family, he even becomes very god-like when around people, as he does as he also pleases if it meant beating his wives and making them and his children weep during the famous Igbo culture holiday, the week of peace. Things Fall Apart - Three Notable Events

Okonkwo gets sent to exile Ezeudu passes away, and the death of the warrior is announced throughout the village. When Okonkwo went to his funeral and shot his gun, and a mourns, he accidentally shoots Ezeudu's 16-year-old son. This act of killing a classman is a crime against the local earth goddess. As a result, Okonkwo must redeem himself by taking himself and his family to exile for over seven years. Okonkwo and his family gather their most valuable belongings and head to Mbanta, a village where his mother lives. An Interview with Chinua Achebe - Reflection Chinua Achebe, who is the author of the famous literature book "Things Fall Apart", this story revolves around Okonkwo, a member of the Umofia clan; who lives to be very great and has a great fear of ending up like his father who was very lazy and feminine. This story sets in Nigeria before civilization, which is around the early 1900's or the late 1800's.  In class, students were assigned to read an interview published by "An African Voice", this interview was with the famous Chinua Achebe, an author of the enduring works of modern African literature. “Coriolanus” is a political play written by the late famous English poet William Shakespeare. The main focus of this play is based on a brave, strong selfish warrior named Coriolanus. Coriolanus is famously known for singlehandedly capturing the Volscian City of Corlies, which is where his nickname “Coriolanus” comes from, his original name is Calius Martius. We are later introduced to Volumnia, his mother. Volumnia is a strong, powerful female character and the domineering mother of the roman warrior, Coriolanus. She cares about her son, but she mainly cares about his honor and success, she has also shaped Coriolanus’ personality, making him the unpredictable selfish warrior that he is. Characterisation of Coriolanus in Act 1

In Shakespeare’s play “Coriolanus,” we are introduced to the main character, a man named Martius, a great warrior of the Roman Republic, a man who has a lot of pride and courage. He is a humble person who does not desire acclaims for his accomplishments. It is known that he is very ignorant and has little patience and has no intention to help the ordinary people (lower class) although they may benefit him in the later future, he relies on his physical strengths that are shown in a battle to prove how dominant he is. We later find out that it is actually his mother who is named Volumina, is who has actually shaped his personality, to be a confident, ignorant and the selfish warrior that we all know.
