TOK - Let's Look at Emotions

A Different Way to Look at Emotions - Emotions, they can bring us joy and they can bring us misery, we can easily recognize our emotions and other people can figure out our emotions by just easily looking at our facial expression and our body language and determine our emotion. But in most cases, people tend to misunderstand others emotions so it often leads to confusion, little do we know that we tend to mix up our own emotions as well. This text tells us how emotions could be shown by body language, facial expressions, reactions in the brain and body; also simply the vibes we give around us, and also on the different emotions of all living things provide and how all sorts of emotions somehow all relate at one point. The very first part of this text tells us a short story of a woman named Lisa Feldman Barrett and how she got asked out on a date by her work colleague. However, Lisa did not fancy him but she agreed to go on the date with this man. During their date she started t...

Language as a WOK - TOK

What would be the advantages and disadvantages of everyone in the world spoke a common language? What would be gained and what would be lost? First of all, it was actually predicted that people would all speak one language in the future. This would take place in a Utopia and “Old” languages would eventually die out and become history. Like everything in life, there is a positive and negative point. If the world as we know it and it’s people spoke only one language, it would be a good thing because it would be easier for us to communicate with others across the globe. Also, it would get rid of the language barrier so we wouldn’t have to spend so much time learning a foreign language to be able to communicate with another person . Instead, we could spend that time collaborating with each other, learn new ideas and think of ways to make our world a better place. In addition, I believe that if we all spoke one language we wouldn’t be racist or judgmental towards each other. We would al...

Arablish | عربليزي

As a student who has spent most of his life speaking fluent Arabic and English, I still struggle with the two languages and code mix and code switch between them. Even though I have taken French courses for a couple of months, I never really felt comfortable speaking it since I am not fluent at it. Also, I want to avoid the humiliation of not being able to speak French that well. Language plays a big role in my life because it is the way of communicating and identifying somebody, at least in my perspective. Growing up with mostly attending private international schools, I was taught how to speak, read and write English and Arabic. In addition, going to an international school helped me make friends with students who were from all over the world and from places I’ve never heard of. Although we all had our own native language, we spoke and communicated only through English since it is a universal language. However, we all spoke it with our own unique accents. Furthermore, being able to ...

Mother Tongue - Opinion Column

Opinion Column: In Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue”, it tells us that language does indeed have an effect in our lives. Language helps us communicate, helps understand one another and learn more, I do believe that Language is somewhat important because obviously we need language to communicate with one another and also we need language so we can learn, also learning foreign language is a good idea so we can learn more of that languages countries and its traditions and culture, basically without language, we are voiceless. Tan discuss on how her Mother's English is Broken and as Amy grew up her mother’s English limited her perception of her, and she was unfortunately ashamed of her Mother’s English, her mother's “limited” English effected the way people would treat her mother, for example, Amy tells “The fact that people in department stores, at banks, and ...
