TOK - RLS: Eyewitness Accounts

Why an eyewitness account alone shouldn't send anyone to prison - TOK

First Order Knowledge -

  • "More than 70 percent of the convictions that have been out turned through DNA testing nationwide involved eyewitnesses who got it wrong, according so the Innocence Project."
  • "Scores of Scientific studies over the decades have shown that eyewitness are often inaccurate. That results in innocents people going to prison."
  • "Scores of scientific studies over the decades have shown that eyewitnesses are often inaccurate. That results in innocent people going into prison."
  • "To it's credit, the Philadelphia Police Department has incorporated many of the reforms."
  • "The parole board is expected to decide within the next 2 weeks. Given lingering doubts, even by the man who prosecuted him, that Brinkley committed the murder, the parole board should set him free."

Second Order Knowledge -

  • Shows that 70% of conviction have failed due to the fact that officials see that eyewitness is trusted and believed that it is very accurate to solve cases.
  • DNA testing shows that it is more accurate than eyewitnesses and scores of sciencetifc studies have shown that as well. I believe this as well because everyone has their unique set of DNA.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed one at a time so they are not compared or feeling competitive and stressed which could lead to misidentification which could lead to the wrong people heading to prison, which has happened a lot.
Knowledge Question -
  • Can a persons memory always be trusted? Should the authorities still trust eyewitnesses or switch to considering DNA testing so solve their crimes?
