TOK - Let's Look at Emotions

A Different Way to Look at Emotions -

Emotions, they can bring us joy and they can bring us misery, we can easily recognize our emotions and other people can figure out our emotions by just easily looking at our facial expression and our body language and determine our emotion. But in most cases, people tend to misunderstand others emotions so it often leads to confusion, little do we know that we tend to mix up our own emotions as well.

This text tells us how emotions could be shown by body language, facial expressions, reactions in the brain and body; also simply the vibes we give around us, and also on the different emotions of all living things provide and how all sorts of emotions somehow all relate at one point. The very first part of this text tells us a short story of a woman named Lisa Feldman Barrett and how she got asked out on a date by her work colleague. However, Lisa did not fancy him but she agreed to go on the date with this man. During their date she started to feel random feelings and Lisa thought that she was in fact interested in this man, and also agreed to a second date. Goals right? Ha, No. She was actually sick and ended up having a flu, she probably did not love this man but maybe only had some sort of affection for this lad. So, we could easily see a scenario of how a person could confuse and mix up their own emotions. Perhaps, Lisa was just somewhat attracted to this man because he saved her from work and because Lisa wanted to change the “scenery” of being in the lab all day and she just wanted a change and he was there to change that.

Many sorts of Psychological tests tells us how humans react and their emotions as well, I believe that this is somewhat false because the human emotion is a big mystery and plus all humans are unique in their own ways. Lisa’s book that states how hunger, fatigue, or illness all produce the same signals as emotions such as anger, anxiety and sadness. Also, Lisa states that things such as having a good healthy diet, working out and having pleasurable things such as a massage would be a way of keeping our emotions in a good state and our mood balanced.

I do believe that surroundings do effect our emotions in a way. For example, if a person is listening to a sad song from Lana Del Rey, the person would probably feel really down and sad, then if a person listens to a nice party song from Martin Garrix or Zedd or a sweet song from ColdPlay then it would set them in a really good mood, it really depends on your surroundings. Basically, my point is that our surrounding impacts our state and emotion, also the activities we do.

Lisa Barrett states that people who drink less recover from a stressful situation quickly. Also, a person who visits the doctor and takes medicine more often than a person who does the complete opposite is more likely to be healthy have less chance to be hospitalised than those who do not.

Another theory from Lisa Barrett that we learn how to react based off different situations from books, TV and parents and other past life experiences. I do agree with this theory because two people who have different pasts may react to similar situations differently.

Overall, I think that we all cannot always trust our feelings in different situations, because our surroundings always determine our feelings. So all I have to say is that what a person thinks, a person becomes.

  1. Your blog post clearly explains how our minds are strange organs that have such unbelievable power. But to what extent can we trust our minds to portray the correct body language to a corresponding emotion? That being said, who knows whether our instinct is affected like how our thoughts are.

  2. I liked your introduction, you introduced emotions and how people misinterpret emotions in a very good way. However in the next paragraph you referred to "a different way to look at emotions" as "this text". i think that you should change it people which text does this text refer to?

Overall, you used evidence from the text to support your statements and your own examples of listening to songs depending on your mood.
