Pop Culture and Media

Media controls our day to day lives, life, as we know it as of today, is based on media, and indeed. It has impacted everyone's life in either a good and a bad way. An aspect of the modern media, is pop culture, pop culture is more than just from what you see on Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and all other social media platforms, it is a way for us to express ourselves, it could vary from thinking Starbucks is too mainstream, fashion tastes and weird mindsets too. Also, the internet knows everything you “Like” due to social media, for example, in the documentary “Generation Like”, they show us that many social media platforms sell certain information to their users to various companies such as Lionsgate, Pepsi, Nike, Adidas and even car brands such as Ford, and in this documentary, they state “You Are What You Like”, which relates to the main message behind this documentary, this helps advertisers sell more and advertise the product they are paid to do so.

The media is something that most people around the world have access to, the media helps us to express who we are using a simple Twitter account and tweet their thoughts, ideas, feelings, opinions and also post pictures all day long; And this is what helps us to understand one another, and who we are and what we do as well which helps advertisers to know what should they advertise when we log in to our accounts, lets say a fan of a certain show would be advertised to the TV shows merchandise shop, their official website, etc. Again, the media/internet is something most people have access to and helps us understand the world today and the people living in it,  for example, let’s say a teenager living in Saudi Arabia really wants to know how life is like in Japan, the teenager could easily just google and hence this would help him understand the Japanese culture more with only a few clicks, amazing how technology works.

They are various audiences that advertisers want to target on all social media platforms, and to an extent, certain times. Like during the 2014 Fifa World Cup, several fast food chains, foods, drinks, and much more advertise and promote for it, for example, KFC would have a bucket with a football pitch theme featuring several famous football stars such as Neymar, Messi, and Cristiano. Another example of this idea is shown in the “Generation Like”, when Oreo a simple cookie and cream food chain was promoting same-sex marriage, I believe that Oreo did this to show people that they are different than most companies and are also open-minded, and the people behind it, believe that this would advance their product to the audiences. Most companies go with modern trends and events. But they mostly avoid any politic references because this topic is quite sensitive and heavy, and one small wrong move and the whole company shuts down, so that is why companies advertisers avoid making any relation with politics and governments.

  1. I like the statement you made, "the media helps us to express who we are using a simple .. thoughts/ideas/feelings to understand one another", because you have tied it into human nature of beings and how advertisers use that to their advantage to know what to advertise to who. This shows your level of understanding and ability to connect to other things and I agree with it. I would have liked to see your opinion of how media messages are a representation of the world and how they fit in it considering economic and political purposes and contexts and how the creative techniques used in media messages are invisible to viewers, readers and listeners.
